726 years ago today the 1300 Magna Carta was issued.
It was the last Magna Carta drawn up by the Royal Chancery, and was distributed under King Edward I’s seal, to the counties and cathedrals of the country.
This Magna Carta was granted on 28th March 1300. Originally granted by King John in 1215, Faversham’s version is a confirmation of the re-issue of King Henry III’s Magna Carta of 1225. This includes the whole text of the 1225 Magna Carta. These were sent to many towns throughout the country.
At the foot of our issue it is stated in Latin that it is for the barons of the Port of Faversham.
You can view Faversham’s 1300 Magna Carta, one of only 7 known to have survived, in our exhibition, open every day with FREE ENTRY.
